Glenda & Frank Kalyk

Winemaking started at the domain over 2,000 years ago, with the Picoron family taking up the reins from 1570 onwards.

Australian couple Glenda and Frank Kalyk and their family took over in 2015, celebrating the history of the estate and the future of the Bordeaux region.

Introduction

The wines do not reflect hectares of vines but the honest expression of a specific place: the famous clay-limestone ridge of Saint-Émilion. We vinify our wines plot by plot, without blending, and only produce a few hundred cases per year. The result is a true expression of our terroir. We believe that nature is our most valuable ally. When it comes to producing our wine – less is more. Less additives, interventions and attempts to change what is natural. Our wine is produced sustainably, using organic methods, without animal products and with minimal intervention.

We celebrate the past and the future of Merlot, the first grape variety planted in Bordeaux. However, as the climate and our environment change, we have to adapt. In doing this, we do not seek to control our ecosystem, but rather to coexist with it, calling traditional winemaking methods into question through creativity and self-expression.

“We produce handmade wines that celebrate the past whilst at the same time inspiring the next generation.”

Philosophy

At Château Picoron we produce hand-made wines that celebrate the past, whilst inspiring the next generation. We do not reproduce – we innovate. We are not seeking to be compared, but to express wines that are uniquely ours, to be shared with family and friends.

We experiment, pioneer and create. Our wines are all unique expressions of Merlot, inspired by but not tied to traditional French wine techniques. By exploiting our constraints, we find the freedom to invent and showcase the Merlot grape.

Our wines are created in accordance with the OUVIPO philosophy, respecting natural and self-imposed constraints.
